Lake Champlain House
This home is located on a bluff with wonderful views overlooking Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains in the distance. The design focus throughout was to engage the exterior and bring the outside in. The small lot size and lakeside setback requirements along with the owners program dictated a small house footprint surrounded by small outdoor yard spaces suggestive of rooms extending out from the house. On the interior is an open plan great room with large banks of windows facing south to maximize solar gain in the winter months and west to take advantage of the sweeping views of the lake. The only break in this line of windows is the granite fireplace which serves as an inviting and grounding element to the transparent window wall. The substantial four foot over-hangs on these roofs are designed to block the sun during the summer months. Maple wood floors and trim accents are contrasted by natural slate floors and a color palette which is drawn from the adjacent lake and sky panorama. The home owners followed the design and construction process with a blog site they created to share the design and construction progress with friends and family.
